Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based style of communication focused on helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence by drawing out their internal motivation and capacity for change. This self-paced course provides learning materials including asynchronous presentations, recommended readings and a participant workbook that outlines a series of practice activities ranging from skill practice worksheets to detailed practice activities. These are outlined in five lessons that are recommended to be completed over a five-week timeline. Each lesson will build on the learning of the previous. Each weekly lesson is estimated to require 3 ½ -5 hours to complete for a total of 20-25 hours to complete the entire course. Participants will learn the principles, processes, and strategies of MI and how to utilize these in order to help clients move toward change.

This is an intensive MI course that consists of the information typically included in an introductory and intermediate course as well as some advanced components as well.

  2. Most of the Recommended readings in this course are from Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change 3rd Edition by Miller and Rollnick. You will need to obtain a copy of the book to complete these readings. It is available at all major retailers.

Who is this Course for:

This course does begin with the foundational material of MI and so is appropriate to those learners without MI experience. Given it’s intensive nature, it is also appropriate for those looking to advance and/or refresh their skills. It is a completely self-paced course, so it is appropriate for those who are self-motivated to complete.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the four principles of Motivational Interviewing (Spirit of MI).
  • Discuss the four processes of Motivational Interviewing.
  • Demonstrate four skills used in Motivational Interviewing (OARS).
  • Differentiate between change talk and sustain talk.
  • Demonstrate the “Testing the Waters” framework to test readiness for planning within an MI conversation.
  • Demonstrate the 5-step process to develop an MI based Action Plan.

Course Components: Each self-paced weekly lesson includes the following tasks:

  • Weekly PRESENTATION– (1 hour)
  • Weekly READING – (1 hour)
  • Weekly PARTICIPANT WORKBOOK – (Practice activities including worksheets and detailed activities) – (1-2 ½ hours)
  • Weekly QUIZ (15 min.)

Upon completion, participants will apply the foundations of MI in their work and explore opportunities to incorporate MI adherent strategies into routine conversations with the people they serve.
